B&W Plays Key Role in Design and Construction of Power Plant Recognized as POWER Magazine's 2013 Plant of the Year

CHARLOTTE, N.C.

The Babcock & Wilcox Company (B&W) (NYSE:BWC) is pleased that its subsidiary, Babcock & Wilcox Power Generation Group, Inc. (B&W PGG) has been recognized as a key member of the project team for the John W. Turk, Jr. Power Plant owned by American Electric Power's (AEP) Southwestern Electric Power Co. (SWEPCO), which recently was named the recipient of POWER Magazine's 2013 Plant of the Year Award. The Turk plant began commercial operation in December 2012 and is one of the most efficient, low-emission coal-fired power plants in North America.

The Plant of the Year Award is POWER magazine's highest honor.

The 600-megawatt Turk plant, located in Hempstead, Ark., is the first commercial ultra-supercritical power plant built in the United States and features a B&W PGG Spiral Wound Universal Pressure (SWUPTM) boiler. B&W PGG's scope included design, manufacture and construction of the plant's steam generation system and Air Quality Control System, including low-NOx (nitrogen oxides) burners, a selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system, spray dry absorber (SDA), pulse jet fabric filter baghouse and associated components.

Ultra-supercritical boilers operate at higher temperatures and pressures than conventional sub-critical coal-fired boilers. The result is a cleaner, more-efficient plant that uses less fuel and produces fewer emissions and a smaller carbon dioxide (CO2) footprint than conventional plants. The Turk plant's B&W PGG-designed environmental systems reduce a variety of emissions, including NOx, sulfur dioxide (SO2) and particulates.
