Leading the world in clean power production technology
The Plant of the Year Award is POWER magazine's highest honor.
The 600-megawatt Turk plant, located in Hempstead, Ark., is the first commercial ultra-supercritical power plant built in the United States and features a B&W PGG Spiral Wound Universal Pressure (SWUPTM) boiler. B&W PGG's scope included design, manufacture and construction of the plant's steam generation system and Air Quality Control System, including low-NOx (nitrogen oxides) burners, a selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system, spray dry absorber (SDA), pulse jet fabric filter baghouse and associated components.
"It was our pleasure to be a partner to AEP in the development and execution of this project, and now to share in the success of the accomplishment," said B&W PGG President and Chief Operating Officer J. Randall Data. "We appreciate the opportunity afforded to us by AEP and look forward to supporting them through the life cycle of the plant's operations.
"The Turk plant is an outstanding example of how clean, low-emissions power generation from coal is an important part of our energy mix, both in the United States and around the world," Data said.
Ultra-supercritical boilers operate at higher temperatures and pressures than conventional sub-critical coal-fired boilers. The result is a cleaner, more-efficient plant that uses less fuel and produces fewer emissions and a smaller carbon dioxide (CO2) footprint than conventional plants. The Turk plant's B&W PGG-designed environmental systems reduce a variety of emissions, including NOx, sulfur dioxide (SO2) and particulates.
