[VIDEO] How to Adjust Operating Pressure on Poppet Valves

Posted February 11, 2019

February 11, 2019

Brian explains the steps of adjusting pressure on two different poppet vales for B&W’s Diamond Power® IK sootblowers.

Standard Internally Adjusted Poppet Valve

  1. Go through the required plant site lock-out-tag-out (LOTO) procedures to isolate the steam/air source from the poppet valve.
  2. Operate the valve trigger to release any trapped pressure between the isolation valve and poppet valve.
  3. Remove the side lock-pin plug. The side lock-pin plug has a built-in lock pin which locks the control disk in place internally to the poppet valve.
  4. To adjust blowing pressure move the control disk up or down as necessary. Re-install the lock pin plug and operate the sootblower to verify new adjusted pressure.
  5. Optional: use the boss and plug on the back of the poppet valve to permanently or temporarily install a pressure gauge to check the pressure of the sootblower during operation.

Externally Adjustable Poppet Valve (EAPC)

Since the EAPC poppet valve is mounted externally, you can adjust the pressure without removing any of the plugs.

  1. Go through the required plant site LOTO procedures to isolate the steam/air source from the poppet valve. Operate the valve trigger to release any trapped pressure between the isolation valve and poppet valve.
  2. Remove the locking tab from the “lock position”, located on top of the poppet valve casting, and reinstall into the “adjust position”.
  3. Adjust the top most nut or spring retainer adjustment nut using the poppet valve adjusting tool.
  4. Be sure the locking tab holds the brass packing nut in place while making adjustments.
  5. After making adjustments, remove the locking tab from the “adjust position” and reinstall back into the “lock position”.
  6. Optional: use the boss and plug on the back of the poppet valve to permanently or temporarily install a pressure gauge to check the pressure of the sootblower during operation.
