Babcock & Wilcox to Provide Package Boilers for City of Akron

Posted July 31, 2019
(BARBERTON, Ohio – July 31, 2019) – The Babcock & Wilcox Company (B&W), a subsidiary of Babcock & Wilcox Enterprises, Inc. (NYSE: BW), announced today it has been awarded a contract for approximately $3 million to design and supply three package boilers for Akron Energy Systems, the district energy provider for the City of Akron, Ohio.

B&W will be a subcontractor to Cleveland, Ohio-based NBW, Inc., who will install the oil and natural gas-fueled package boilers, which will be used to provide cost-effective and environmentally sound thermal heating, steam and hot water for downtown Akron businesses.

“B&W is the global leader in package boiler technology, and we’re pleased to have earned the opportunity to provide these boilers to the City of Akron,” said B&W Chief Executive Officer Kenneth Young. “In just a few months, B&W will be relocating its headquarters to the city. We’re looking forward to providing products that will help meet the energy needs of the Akron area, and to being part of the Akron community.”

“I’d like to thank the City of Akron, the city administration and city residents for the warm welcome and support they’ve offered to B&W,” Young said.

Akron Mayor Dan Horrigan expressed his appreciation for B&W’s work.

“We are honored to welcome an iconic local company like Babcock & Wilcox to Akron,” Mayor Horrigan said. “B&W’s experience with clean-burning natural gas technology will help the City improve energy efficiency and reliability while further reducing the carbon footprint of our energy system that provides critical utility service to Akron Children’s Hospital, Cleveland Clinic Akron General, Canal Place and dozens of downtown buildings.”

Engineering will be performed in B&W’s Barberton, Ohio office, and each boiler will be designed to provide up to 150,000 pounds of steam per hour. Delivery of the boilers is scheduled for the third quarter of 2019.

Last year, B&W announced plans to relocate its corporate headquarters and several hundred employees to a leased space in Akron’s East End development complex. The company is working closely with the City of Akron in anticipation of the move later this year.
