Halifax, NS (August 17, 2021) – FPS is pleased to announce the completion of our second conversion to gas at TransAlta Corporation’s thermal power generation facilities near Wabamun Lake, Alberta, Canada.

The full conversion of Keephills Unit 2 was a significant milestone in TransAlta’s transition off coal, and commitment to 100 per cent clean electricity by the end of 2021 in Alberta. As the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractor on this conversion project, FPS’ scope of supply included: the engineering study and boiler modelling, the gas firing system, air system modifications, on-site construction and commissioning. Edmonton-based ONEC Engineering and Construction was a key part of the FPS led team that helped make this project a success.

This project was the second of its kind for FPS and TransAlta, following the successful conversion of Sundance Unit 6 in February 2021. Post conversion Sundance 6 and Keephills 2 units maintain their full nameplate capacity of 401 MW and 395 MW while realizing a CO2 per MW reduction of over 50 percent.

With the completion of the project FPS adds to a growing list of successful large-scale gas conversions and continues to cement its reputation as the industry leader in this field.
