Circular Economy

WASTE TO ENERGY – Most waste ends in landfills. Rather than future generations facing the impacts of a traditional, linear economy – Babcock & Wilcox is helping our planet transition to a circular economy where energy is recycled in a loop and waste becomes a resource in and of itself. Waste-to-energy power plants are an integrated part of this model. Waste is burned at high temperatures to destroy chemicals, heat is transformed into energy and steam drives a turbine that creates clean electricity. Most importantly – the waste is diverted from the landfill and enters “the loop,” while we recover clean water, metals and other materials.

As such, grates are a significant focus area for us. Over the past 80 years we have supplied more than 500 combustion grates worldwide. Many of our older grates are still in operation, running efficiently and living up to current environmental standards.

Carbon Neutral Biomass​

Biomass is a renewable fuel and is considered CO2-neutral. Our biomass technology solves serious problems by protecting the earth and atmosphere from greenhouse gas emissions.

Today we can recover energy from biomass in highly efficient energy plants – generating heat, process steam, electricity, syngas, and/or bio-oil.

The plant is the first unit in the world to be able to seamlessly move from 100% thermal for district heating and 0% electrical to 100% electrical and 0% thermal or anywhere between, providing the most flexibility of any WtE facility in the world.
