Making Sense of ACE

The EPA’s recently published Affordable Clean Energy (ACE) Rule identifies heat rate improvements as the Best Source for Emissions Reductions (BSER) to control CO2. While the rule currently does not set limits, it establishes the framework for states to use to set achievable unit level heat rate improvements (HRI) at the plants. We prepared an overview of the rule, summarized the timeline, and review the six BSER candidate technologies which can help you improve plant heat rate and boiler efficiency.

Boiler Water Chemistry Control Basics

Proper water chemistry control affects boiler operation by optimizing efficiency and reducing maintenance costs, but can improve performance and life expectancy of other system components as well, including heat exchangers, pumps, turbines and piping throughout the steam generation and condensation cycle.

This new article in our Learning Center discusses steam purity requirements, water sampling and analysis techniques, and includes a table of boiler feedwater limits.

CFB Boiler Upgrades Restore Capacity, Improve Reliability, and Reduce Emissions

Immediately after operations of a new circulating fluidized-bed (CFB) boiler were turned over to the customer at a large petrochemical facility in southeast Asia, the unit began experiencing operational and maintenance issues. The boiler could typically run no higher than 70% MCR load.

B&W was called to conduct an extensive engineering review and determined that 100% MCR operating condition of the CFB boiler could be achieved by considering several key functional conditions and design fundamentals. Read how B&W’s upgrades resulted in the unit successfully reaching and continuously operating at full load capacity.

ESP Controls and Maintenance Seminar, December 3-5

This past June, our ESP Controls and Maintenance Seminar sold out and we had to turn some people away due to limited seating. But since there was so much interest in this topic, we are excited to announce a second seminar in December!

Join fellow operators, engineers, and maintenance personnel for this 2-1/2-day, in-depth technical training. Explore factors affecting ESP performance, such as normal maintenance techniques and procedures, and current trends in energization of precipitators. Participants will learn methods to improve performance of existing precipitators to meet regulatory compliance goals. In addition, included in the seminar are techniques to optimize the operation of precipitator control technologies.
