The design and operation of fuel burning equipment must be supported by expert analysis of a wide variety of solid, liquid and gaseous fuels and their products of combustion, and characterization of their behavior under various conditions. Long-term operation of steam generating equipment requires extensive water programs including high purity water analysis, water treatment and water purification.

Equipment must also be chemically cleaned at intervals to remove water-side deposits.
