The Clean Environment Development Facility (CEDF) in Alliance, Ohio, is a sophisticated state-of-the-art facility for integrated evaluation of combustion and post-combustion emissions control options.

One area of emissions research of particularly high interest at the CEDF is oxycoal combustion. The process uses pure oxygen for the burning of coal in electricity generating plants. In this system, nitrogen that comes in with the air for the combustion process is eliminated. As a result, the exhaust gas is highly concentrated carbon dioxide that is ready for long-term storage.

B&W will evaluate operation and emissions from several types of coal, including bituminous, Powder River Basin (PRB), as well as lignite.
