Coal injection provides a unique opportunity to reduce coke usage and increase furnace productivity of blast furnaces.
Additionally, coal injection offsets or eliminates the costs associated with coke oven rebuilds and repairs. Babcock & Wilcox and Armco, Inc. of Middletown, Ohio, jointly developed and patented a system for efficiently injecting pulverized coal into the blast furnace.
The combination of Armco's knowledge of blast furnace operations and our experience with the preparation and handling of pulverized coal in power generation applications led to the design of the first system in 1965. The result of this experience and technology base is a system designed to deliver coal to the blast furnace trouble-free, with operational availability of nearly 100%.
