Babcock & Wilcox Technical Services Group, Inc. has extensive experience in the environmental remediation of former nuclear facilities, ranging from the complete dismantlement and decommissioning (D&D) to free release.
Since 1982, we have been in an active stage of D&D for one or more of our own nuclear facilities. This internal D&D activity includes extensive first-of-a-kind experience in successfully decommissioning our legacy nuclear fuel development and production facilities.
At our Apollo facility, a 73,000 sq. ft. owner/operator facility (thorium and high-enriched uranium [HEU]), we completely dismantled and remediated to Nuclear Regulatory Commission's (NRC) free release guidelines resulting in the first release of a major HEU fuel manufacturing facility by NRC.
At our Parks Facility we operated, deactivated and self-performed the decommissioning of a 115-acre nuclear complex consisting of a mixed oxide plutonium fuel fabrication facility, an HEU fuel facility, and a metals facility and associated hot cells.
