B&W offers several products for upgrading and improving reliability and performance of existing standard and legacy products.
The upgrade offerings are the result of continued research and development and include:
- Plasma Arc Ignition (PAI) Systems for oil igniters
- Improved electrical connections
- Eddy plates for oil igniters
- Six-hole nozzles for oil igniters
PAI (Plasma Arc Ignition) Systems for Oil Igniters
B&W offers an efficient FPS spark
ignition system to overcome the common problem of carbon build-up on the spark
plug tip of oil igniters. Over time this carbon build-up reduces reliability of
the igniter spark, and consequently the igniter.
The PAI system is designed to provide a high output pulsed spark (3 sparks/second) for the forceful ignition of fuel oil. Each powerful spark pulse creates a shock at the spark plug tip, which disperses any material collecting on the tip of the spark plug. This continuous cleaning of the spark tip reduces the need for manual cleaning characteristic of continuous voltage ignition systems.
The PAI can be easily retrofitted on existing oil igniters and comes standard on new oil igniters. The benefits achieved with this upgrade include:
- Self-cleaning spark tip that eliminates carbon build-up on the spark tip thus improving reliability
- Low output voltage of 2,000 Vdc versus 10,000 Vdc found on other igniters
- Surface gap provides more surface for arc, lessening erosion, resulting in longer life
Improved Electrical Connections
The igniter wire terminators
and capture spring assembly, located on every spark rod and flame rod flex
conduit assembly, was redesigned to provide a more robust product that easily
installs on the flex conduits. The upgrade is packaged as a "Wire Terminator
Kit" that consists of a capture spring, a teflon bushing, a tip spring, a high
temperature extension screw and a set screw. The benefits of this upgrade are:
- Larger surface area for better electrical contact/circuit reliability
- Easier to replace stranded wire in flex conduit assemblies
- Longer life of wire terminator components when re-connecting flex conduits
To optimize performance in the area of
combustion and flame stability, FPS revised the geometry of the eddy
plate by increasing the spacing between the restrictor plate and the eddy
plate. This change increased directional air flow and decreases back swirl,
resulting in proper mixing of the combustion air and fuel for improved flame
stability. This upgrade is especially beneficial to early vintage igniters
(1988 - 1995), igniters that were installed without an external air source, and
igniters that utilize a variable air flow source such as windbox air. The
benefits of this upgrade are:
- Increased directional air flow and decreased back swirl. This improves the flame envelope around the flame rod, and improves flame detection
- Increased light-off reliability
Six-Hole Nozzles for Oil Igniters
The six-hole nozzle is designed with larger
primary nozzle holes. When coupled with our standard atomizer, it produces a
clean, bright and stable flame. The benefits of this upgrade are:
- Cleaner, brighter flame, resulting in less fuel inside the fogging holes
- The raw fuel from the fogging holes is less likely to hit the flame rod which improves "flame proving" reliability
