Babcock & Wilcox User Group Associations
Cyclone Users
Association
The Cyclone Users Association consists of
some 40 utility and industrial members who operate the nearly 100 cyclone-fired
boilers built between the late 1950s and 1997 and still in service today. This
Association was founded in 1976 to bring together knowledgeable people from the
users organizations with the designers/suppliers of the equipment to discuss
the various challenges faced while operating and maintaining wet bottom
cyclone-fired boiler equipment.
While cyclone boiler operation and maintenance are the key items of discussion, at the members' request, much time has been devoted in recent meetings to the subjects of emissions (NOx) reduction and unit conversions to western (powder river basin, or PRB) coal-firing on cyclone boilers.
The format of the meeting includes technical presentations with question-and-answer sessions. We invite and expect lively, open discussion to learn from each other and develop a better idea of what it takes to obtain and maintain good availability and reliability.
Radiant Boiler (RB) Users
Association
The RB Users Association consists of 43 utilities that
operate B&W drum boilers at 53 plant sites, which combined generate
approximately 35,000 MWe. Through a partnership between the member owners, the
Association shares knowledge and techniques in solving specific plant problems
common to the operation and maintenance of drum boilers.
The goals of the RB Users Association are:
- To convene knowledgeable people and share specific techniques for operation and maintenance of B&W radiant drum utility boilers.
- To analyze common problems in an open, professional manner and provide engineered solutions, as required, to overcome specific problems.
- To discuss, as partners, the common objective of improving plant performance.

Universal Presssure (UP) Users
Association
The UP Users Association consists of 48 utilities that
operate B&W universal pressure boilers at 79 plant sites, which combined
generate approximately 80,900 MWe. Through a partnership between the member
owners, the Association shares knowledge and techniques in solving specific
plant problems common to the operation and maintenance of UP boilers.
