The Babcock & Wilcox Company Named a Best Ohio Employer

BARBERTON, Ohio, May 19, 2006 The Babcock & Wilcox Company (B&W) was honored as one of the ‘best of the best’ in a special ceremony recognizing Ohio employers on May 9 in Columbus, Ohio. Sponsored by the Ohio Chamber of Commerce and the Society of Human Resource Management, the program named 10 small and 10 large companies as being the “best employers in Ohio.” B&W ranked second in the large company category (companies with more than 200 employees), right behind Edward Jones, a financial services organization that this year came in 16th in the nation in the Fortune magazine ranking of the 100 best U.S. companies.

“B&W is a very special company and the employees working here have incredible loyalty and dedication,” said Michael J. McCann, director of Administration. “We have implemented a number of best-practice programs to attract and retain the top employees in our industry. But more than that, our employees consistently tell us that B&W is a place where it’s still possible to build a lasting career, and that we have a culture with strong core values, a high level of teamwork, and a real dedication to serving our customers in the power industry.”

“It’s quite an honor to be named one of the best employers in the state, and it’s something the company and its employees can really take pride in,” McCann continued. “It also helps with our recruiting efforts. We talk with candidates about how we’re a great place to work when they interview with us, but receiving these kinds of awards really helps to validate that what we say about our culture and about our intentions to be a great employer are ‘the real deal.’” B&W expects to hire at least 100 new employees this year for its Barberton operations.

The Best Employers in Ohio awards program is designed to identify, recognize and honor the best places of employment in Ohio. Companies from across the state entered the two-part process. The first part consisted of evaluating each nominated company's workplace policies, practices, philosophy, systems and demographics. This part of the process was worth approximately 25 percent of the total evaluation. The second part consisted of an employee survey to measure the employee experience and was worth approximately 75 percent of the total evaluation. The combined scores determined the top companies and the final ranking.

B&W, one of the largest employers in the Akron area, offers a wide range of benefits and other employee programs designed to make it a great place to work, including work-life balance initiatives like a compressed work week where employees get every other Friday off, flexible schedules and benefits, generous compensation and bonus programs, numerous training and development opportunities, health and wellness programs, family friendly employee activities and more. The company’s average voluntary turnover rate has been about three percent over the past five years - less than half the industry average.

The Babcock & Wilcox Company is a subsidiary of McDermott International, Inc., a leading worldwide energy services company. McDermott subsidiaries manufacture steam-generating equipment, environmental equipment, and products for the U.S. government. They also provide engineering and construction services for the offshore oil and natural gas industry.
