RETROFIT OR CONVERSION:
A very economical and proven approach for installing a BFB for biomass-firing is to retrofit or convert an existing power or chemical recovery boiler, which may have been slated for retirement due to changing demands for electricity and/or steam, or due to environmental regulations.
CO-FIRING:
Co-firing involves the use of biomass fuel in addition to and complementary of existing coal supplies in pulverized coal-fired boilers. With co-firing, much of the existing power plant's equipment can be used, and emission levels are reduced with little to no loss in efficiency. Typically in co-firing applications, 10 to 15 percent of the heat input is derived from the biomass fuel. Such applications are economical, and help achieve Renewable Portfolio Standards (RPS) compliance, enable Renewable Energy Certificate (REC) sales, and afford other economic incentives in the form of tax credits or production incentives.
