Distillation & Purification Systems

B&W MEGTEC designs, builds and installs distillation systems to separate water and solvent, and solvents from each other. These can be continuous or batch processes, as well as vacuum, atmospheric or pressure, depending on the solvents and purities required.

These systems are suitable to:

  • Treat the effluent from a regenerable carbon adsorption solvent recovery system
  • Separate solvent mixtures into individual solvents in chemical, pharmaceutical, and other specialty industries to make them suitable for recycle, and reuse
  • Remove solvent contaminants from wastewater to make the water suitable for disposal, saving hazardous waste disposal costs or surcharge costs

Pilot Distillation System

Designed to be flexible, the Pilot Distillation System is capable of meeting a wide range of application configurations and flow schemes. This in-house bench-scale lab is available for process development testing of various liquid feed materials. The lab is designed to identify what purity levels are possible, as well as to generate data for determining full-scale commercial design. Testing in a laboratory setting reduces risk and development costs by providing a fully controlled environment to facilitate investigating first-of-a-kind concepts and process improvements.

Located at the B&W Research Center in Barberton, Ohio, the Pilot Distillation System is engineered, maintained, and operated by chemical engineers who directly collaborate with end users to develop test methodologies that make it possible to collect critical data during the experimental phase. The test results can provide vital insight for determining project viability for further pilot campaigns or production scale-up. 

The Pilot Distillation System is designed to fit various configurations and flow schemes. Capabilities of the bench-top system include:

  • Continuous, semi-continuous, or batch operation
  • Interchangeable random or structured packing for evaluation of impact on mass transfer
  • Positive displacement metering pumps ensure accurate feed flow
  • Overhead condenser
  • Reflux control, including reflux tank and pump
  • High-efficiency, stainless steel, shell-and-tube heat exchangers with recirculated temperature baths for heating and/or cooling control
  • Distillation receiver vessels for overhead product and column bottoms
  • Measurement instrumentation, including thermocouples and pressure transmitters
  • Electronic data logging
  • On-site chemistry lab equipped with state-of-the-art analytical instruments (such as GC, ICP-MS, IC, TGA/DSC, SEM) and a staff of senior scientists who regularly conduct method development
