Babcock & Wilcox Canada Wins Contract for Bruce Power Unit 1 and Unit 2 Containment Isolation Bulkhead Work
Cambridge, ON: October 24, 2005 Babcock & Wilcox Canada has won a contract for the manufacture, supply, installation and removal of the containment isolation bulkheads for Bruce Power A Units 1 and 2. This is the second major contract Babcock & Wilcox Canada has signed with Bruce Power within a week.
The bulkhead contract is part of the Bruce A Unit 1 and Unit 2 refurbishment project in Tiverton, Ontario. The bulkheads provide containment boundaries that isolate the Unit 1 and 2 reactor vaults during the refurbishment project from Units 3 and 4, which will continue to operate. In addition to on-site construction work, the project will generate additional shop hours for Babcock & Wilcox Canada’s manufacturing facility in Cambridge, Ontario. The final bulkhead removal work is expected to be complete in 2009.
“Several factors were key to Babcock & Wilcox Canada’s success in winning the contract,” says Rich Reimels, president, Babcock & Wilcox Canada. “Our quality, experience, and ability to deliver on time, combined with a fully integrated manufacture and construction capability, and our technical expertise as a nuclear equipment manufacturer and service provider were all important assets.”
The Bruce Power Nuclear Generating Station is located on the eastern shore of Lake Huron, north of Kincardine, Ontario. The Bruce A and B stations each consist of four CANDU pressurized heavy water nuclear reactors. Unit 1 and Unit 2, each rated at 750 MWe capacity, were taken out of service in 1997 and 1995 respectively. Re-starting of Bruce A Unit 1 and Unit 2 will generate additional electricity output to serve the electricity market. Bruce Power signed a contract with B&W Canada earlier this week for the supply of 16 steam generators for the refurbishment project.
Babcock & Wilcox Canada serves North American electric utility and industrial markets and the global nuclear utility market. Based in Cambridge, Ontario, it is a wholly-owned subsidiary of The Babcock & Wilcox Company in Barberton, Ohio, which is an operating unit of McDermott International, Inc. (NYSE:MDR).
