Babcock & Wilcox Canada awarded $20 million contract for Elk Falls
CAMBRIDGE, ON: January 17, 2003 Babcock & Wilcox Canada Ltd. ("B&W Canada") has been awarded a contract valued in excess of $20 million (CDN) as part of Norske Skog Canada Limited's No.2 Recovery Boiler modernization project at its Elk Falls Division in Campbell River, British Columbia.
The original recovery boiler was supplied by B&W Canada in the mid-1960s, and has been the workhorse of the pulp mill ever since. NorskeCanada has embarked on a modernization project to upgrade the steam and recovery plant to meet the demands of an ever-increasing competitive marketplace.
"Several factors were key to B&W Canada's success with this proposal," says Len Bickerton, Proposal Manager, B&W Canada, "an aggressive, but realistic, shutdown schedule; B&W's fully integrated design-manufacture and construction capability; a competitive price; and the ability to provide technical expertise as the OEM supplier."
The project includes engineering, procurement, manufacturing, transportation, demolition, and construction. B&W Canada will provide a new membrane furnace, primary and secondary superheaters, and auxiliary equipment. The furnace walls and floor will be manufactured in B&W Canada's Cambridge facility, and the superheaters in the company's Melville, Saskatchewan plant. B&W Canada's regional office in Richmond, British Columbia will coordinate demolition of the old equipment, installation of new equipment, training, start-up, and commissioning. The boiler start-up is scheduled for March 2004.
